Rhinoplasy procedure

A rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the goals and conditions of the nose correction, a rhinoplastic correction is divided in two different methods – open and closed.

During a closed rhinoplasty incisions are made from the mucous membranes, so there are no scars visible after the surgery. This technique is more complicated and requires a highly-experienced surgeon. An open rhinoplasty is sometimes used for secondary surgeries when they need a wider access to the surgical field in case of a doctor has doubts on performing a closed procedure.

There is a certain procedure of steps in the closed technique – to form a septum after the incision, to reduce nose ridge height, finally to shape a nose tip and nostrils and close up the cut. An order of the steps is different for an open rhinoplasty – first to start with separating the nasal skin and the soft tissues, then to initially form a nose tip and ridge, then correct a septum, nose bones, after that to give a final shape to the tip and ridge, to give a proper shape to nostrils, close up the cut and apply a bandage.

If the goal is not to reduce but, on the contrary, to increase some elements of the nose, then transplants are used in this case. Generally, plastic material is taken from a patient’s body to avoid further rejection. A septum cartilage might be used. If this variant is not possible, then the material is taken from an earflap or costal cartilage. These transplants are softened and reshaped before the surgery. Bone material is extracted from a plowshare bone, ribs, hipbone.

Post-op rehabilitation

During the operation doctors insert tampons into the nasal passages of the patient, then apply a splint on the nose. The patient remains in the clinic to be monitored by professional medical personnel for one day. Tampons are removed on the next day after the surgery. The splint is removed in a week.

It’s recommended to hold back on smoking and drinking alcohol, sleep on a high bed-head, avoid strenuous activities for 2 weeks, refrain from wearing glasses for 2-3 months.

A patient should expect bruising around the eyes and swelling on the second day after the surgery. The peak of the swelling is expected on the 2nd-3rd day, no special treatment needed. There might be other temporary complications, such as nasal stuffiness, loss of smelling, minor pains. The final result of the rhinoplasty is rated in 6-12 months.
