A problem of everted ears gives great esthetic discomfort, and this cosmetic defect is not always easy to hide. Girls have to wear the same hair, while the situation is even more complicated for men. It’s harder for children to put up with the fact that they are different, in this case they might feel insecure and have inhibitions about their appearance that will also go over to their adult life. While the everted ears problem is easily and quickly fixed with a help of a plastic surgery.

Indications

Otoplasty can be performed both upon a doctor’s prescription and patient’s desire. From an esthetic point of view, everted ears might be caused by a flat or missing antihelix, excess earleather or a combination of the both factors.

Contra-indications

  1. ARVI, ARD;
  2. Acute exacerbation of a chronic respiratory or cardiovascular disease;
  3. Critical performance status (critical cardiac, respiratory, hepatic, kidney failure);
  4. coagulation failure.

Anyway, a decision on the surgery is taken on an individual basis by your surgeon. An additional examination and consult of specialized doctors are prescribed if needed.

Otoplasty procedure

Otoplasty is performed on adults and children older than 5 years. There are no significant differences in the surgery, except that an otoplasty is sometimes performed under general anesthesia if a kid is nervous.

A patient doesn’t have to stay at the hospital after the surgery, the whole procedure usually takes about 1 hour.

Post-op rehabilitation

As a rule, absorbable stitches are applied to the cut, so there’s no need to remove them after the surgery. A surgeon also applied a bandage saturated with antiseptic on the ears to prevent an infection. A patient wears the bandage for one week and also wears it at night for one month to avoid ear damaging while sleeping. It’s not recommended to wash hair for the first 7 days after the surgery for the same reason.

As after any other surgical procedure, a patient feels pain in the area of the surgery. It’s usually minor but pain relievers are prescribed in case of severe pains. Hematomas do not develop, as a rule. Keloid scars remain only in case of the genetic predisposition, however, they might be also removed in a surgical or conservative way.

If the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, the following MEDICAL TESTS are required:

  1. Complete blood count + blood platelets + Blood type + Rh factor
  2. Coagulogram
  3. Urine test
  4. RWblood test
  5. Fluorography (valid for 12 months)
  6. Blood sugar
  7. Blood tests for hepatitis B, C
  8. Biochemical blood test (total protein, sodium, potassium, calcium, chlorine, cholesterol, BUN, creatinin, glucose, TB, DB, AST, ALT, chlorides)
  9. ECG with a breakdown (statement of a cardiologist if needed)
  10. Statements of narrow specialists (endocrinologist, cardiologist, therapist, etc. upon readings)
  11. Statement of a therapist for patients older than 60 years.
