Indications

Sometimes patients with a poor developed chin want to make it wider, enhance or just make it straight, thus prolong the face. Mentoplasty helps to correct a heavy, asymmetric, disproportional chin. A tear-shaped (or double) chin is one of the most common indications.

Contra-indications

  1. ARVI, ARD;
  2. Acute exacerbation of a chronic respiratory or cardiovascular disease;
  3. Critical performance status (critical cardiac, respiratory, hepatic, kidney failure);
  4. coagulation failure.

Anyway, a decision on the surgery is taken on an individual basis by your surgeon. An additional examination and consult of specialized doctors are prescribed if needed.

Mentoplasty procedure

Implants are most often used to correct a poor developed or asymmetric chin. An incision can be made either under the chin in the natural fold, or from the side of the mucous tunic of the mouth, between a gum and a lower lip. An incision location depends on the goals of the surgery. A prosthesis is fixed to the bone above the periosteum. Doctors can use patient’s fat instead of artificial materials that is implanted into the soft tissue area. Bone grafting technique can move a chin forward without using artificial materials.

Chin plastics is also performed with fillers. Fillers are jelly filling materials, which are implanted subdermally to create a desired volume. They are created on a hyaluronic acid basis. Fillers don’t affect skin sensibility, are not allergic, however the effect of this procedure lasts up to 2 years.

Chin reduction is performed by bone transection (osteotomy) or its partial removal. A new chin shape is created due to a recently formed free space with skin stiches.

Liposuction procedure corrects a double chin. Excess fat is removed with special thin cannulas. In case of a drastic sagging, face and neck lift is performed along with liposuction. A surgeon makes an incision in the skin fold under the chin, tightens sagging muscles up and sutures them in a right position, removes excess fat and skin, then closes with a cosmetic stich.

Post-op rehabilitation

A special bandage to fix an implant and help cut recovery is adjusted on the chin after the surgery. A patient wears it for 2-3 days, after a double chin correction – about 14 days. Providing a small incision, stiches are removed in 5-7 days. It’s recommended to sleep on the back so that the chin is facing up and there’s no pressure on the tissue. A patient might experience pain in the operated area for up to 5 days, swelling will fade away in 14 days after the surgery. It’s recommended to avoid strenuous activities to prevent traumas to the chin and moving the endoprosthesis. Providing an incision made from the side of the mucous tunic of the mouth, a patient must also follow oral hygiene care. A doctor should rate results of the mentoplasty procedure only in 3-4 months. It’s recommended to quit smoking and drinking alcohol after the surgery.

Complications

Skin sensibility of the chin might decrease after the mentoplasty procedure due to the implant. Patients might feel discomfort when chewing food are talking.
