Reductional mammoplasty includes removing excess skin and fat, in some cases – partly glandular tissue as well. The goal of this plastic surgery is to make the breast size proportionally corresponding to the body shape of the patient. Breast weight scale is as follows: up to 500g – small and medium breast, up to 1000g – large breast, more than 1500g – extra-large breast. 300-600g of tissue is removed during the surgery, while it’s necessary to remove at least 500g from each breast for a significant effect that will help with spine ache.

The procedure is recommended to patients with macromastia (very large breasts), which gives them esthetic and physical discomfort. It’s hard for them to find proper fitting clothes and lingerie, they suffer from excessive sweating, irritation under breasts, back ache, especially in cervical spine, crooked erectness, increased fatigability, skin roughness in bra brands pressure areas. These women can’t do certain sports activities and have predisposition to breast ptosis (sagging).

  1. ARVI, ARD;
  2. Acute exacerbation of a chronic respiratory or cardiovascular disease;
  3. Critical performance status (critical cardiac, respiratory, hepatic, kidney failure);
  4. coagulation failure.

Anyway, a decision on the surgery is taken on an individual basis by your surgeon. An additional examination and consult of specialized doctors are prescribed if needed.

Surgery procedure

A doctor makes photos of the patient’s breasts, measures some parameters and put on marks before the breast reduction procedure. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. A surgeon makes incisions in accordance with the marks.

There are 2 types of incisions used in the breast reduction – vertical and anchored. The first variant is preferred for small surgical procedures – an incision is made around the areola and then goes vertically down to the underbreast fold. An anchored access is made the same way only a horizontal incision under the breast is added too. This method is recommended for procedures when a reductional mammoplasty is made together with a breast lift to achieve the best esthetic results.

Fat and glandular tissue is removed after incisions are made, then excess skin is excised. A nipple and areola are relocated higher without separating them from blood vessels and nerves. An areola can also be reduced if needed to proportionally correspond to a new breast size. Then a surgeon inserts a drain tube in each breast to remove accumulated fluids, sutures cut ends, puts on a sterile dressing.

In situations when a woman has macromastia with a drastic breast ptosis and needs a serious surgery, a nipple with areola can be relocated only after their full separation. Thus, such a surgery often results in loss of sensitivity and lactation ability.

Post-op rehabilitation

A recovery period after the breast reduction surgery is about 1-2 months. Drain tubes and dressings are removed in 2 days. External stiches are removed in 2 weeks. A patient can return to work in a week. Bruises and swelling pass away in a few weeks. Scars stay intense for up to six months, then get paler. It’s recommended to wear compression garments for 1 month, sleep on the back at first, avoid strenuous activities for 6 months.
